Iraq’s Prime Minister to Submit Resignation Amid Monthslong Protests

BAGHDAD—Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi said Friday he would submit his resignation to Parliament in response to blistering criticism from the country’s top cleric that followed one of the deadliest days of antigovernment protests.

Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani earlier Friday called into question the government’s handling of recent street protests and urged Iraq’s Parliament to act to prevent the country from “sliding into chaos, violence and destruction.”
